The bitsy story

“Momma, where are my toys?” – was my toddler’s defensive retort when she accidentally broke the wing of a flimsy toy duckling. I wasn’t even fond of that duck in the first place – so in a bid to get her something brighter, shinier, and unbreakable, I strode from shop to shop not finding what I was looking for, and ending up getting some cotton candy instead.

This happened when we moved to Dhaka after living in the US for close to two decades. At the time I had a hard time finding meaningful toys and kids' items here – things that are inspiring, engaging, and fun – things that are of great quality and do not require shattering a piggy bank. The undersupply of open spaces also made me think about the merit of creative and open-ended play in a child’s learning years. I realized we need more awareness around the value of playtime experience in our children’s mental and emotional welfare. I acutely felt a lot can be done to enhance the type of toys, stationeries, and children’s lifestyle items available here – in terms of quality, safety, variety, and aesthetics. Moreover, I saw hardly any option between the poor quality toys and other kids’ products flooding the local market, and the immensely expensive ones that are usually available only in a handful of stores.

Bitsy is a humble start to addressing these gaps. Imagine a robotic STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths) kit that includes all the parts with which your child can build little robots and get acquainted with the mechanics of things working together, or a DIY (Do It Yourself) dinosaur paint set with which your toddlers can get creative painting their favorite mini dinosaurs and learning about them at the same time. At Bitsy, our aspiration for our children is to be curious in creative play that promotes learning and independence and sets them on a path to discovering their passions.

Bitsy is an online platform for kids that focuses on Montessori and STEAM toys, learning kits, and digital educational content. Through Bitsy, my aim is to bring forth access to toys, games, and activities that stimulate our children’s imagination, encourage learning and creativity, and instill curiosity – all while maintaining international quality and safety standards at an affordable price.

With Bitsy toys, I aspire to develop a community – families, friends, and caregivers who share a vested interest in enriching our children’s playtime experience. We all learn best when we are relaxed, and our kids are no different. The type of leisure activities and the kind of toys we nudge our children towards will often shape the quality of their thought processes and perspectives in life. Together, let’s help our young ones develop better, express themselves with clarity, and most importantly have fun doing all these.

I welcome you all to join us in raising smarter and happier kids!
